Remembering Your Purpose in Life

by Laura Bonilla
Spiritual Coaching and Hypnotherapy

Many people come to see me because they feel “stuck”. Others feel “disconnected”, “lost”, “confused” “frustrated”. Can you relate to them? Each of us is trying to find our place in this world, in society, we’re trying to find our purpose in life, to be happy. In a deeper sense, what we are really trying to find is “ourselves”, our “Higher Selves”. Let me explain.

In many societies, especially here in the West, great emphasis is placed on “success”. Success in the West is mainly defined by financial success, by having a ‘great’ career, or perfect relationships. It is what we know as “The American Dream”.

So, we start feeling as a ‘failure’ when this “success” is not achieved. There is family, friends, and/or society pressure to meet certain expectations. With this feeling of failure come depression, frustration, anxiety, and a feeling of being stuck.

Then we start wondering what our “life purpose” is and why is that we can’t put our arms around it. What is it? Where do we find it? Most of us may be under the impression that a “life purpose” is something “big”, “monumental”. We may be thinking we must be changing people’s lives, or publish a best-seller, or be some type of celebrity, or be wildly rich, to achieve our “purpose”. We determine that we “will” be happy when this is achieved, but this never comes. Why? Because this is not what life is about, this is not what “our” purpose may be. Our purpose is our soul evolution and has little to do with what we “do” in this life. It’s more related to what we “are”, is more about “being” than “doing”.

I know we were taught it was about “doing”, “being successful” and this would bring happiness. Let’s stop for a moment and consider the many examples in this world of people who we may know, who may not ‘have’ a lot, or may not have a very accomplished career, but there is a sense of happiness about them, a sense of joy that surrounds them. On the other hand, we all know of the CEO with a broken family, a workaholic lifestyle, involved in work politics, and very unbalanced life. He may have a successful career, but is he happy?

There is nothing wrong with “having”, with having money, lots of it, and nothing wrong with the great career. What I’m saying is deeper than this. What I’m saying is that this is “not” what life is about. This is not necessarily equated to our happiness. Happiness and true life purpose are more related to our inner state of being. That’s why I am saying it is about “being”.
